Welcome to the new home of National Fitness online. We are a youth-led non-profit in Mogadishu, and we use fitness, sport, traditional Somali culture, community engagement and skills development to build healthier people and stronger communities.
This website is where we will share our programmes, stories and updates. To start, here is a short introduction to who we are and what guides our work.
Our vision and mission
Our vision is a strong and peaceful Somalia where young people are healthy, confident, resilient and actively contributing to their communities and country.
Our mission is to provide young Somalis, particularly those affected by conflict, trauma and other challenges, with safe and respectful opportunities to improve wellbeing, regain hope, develop skills and build a sense of belonging.
Our five strategic pillars
Everything we do is organised around five pillars:
- Fitness, Sport and Culture: year-round fitness, sport and traditional Somali games that bring people together and promote healthy lifestyles.
- Mental Health and Psychosocial Support: safe, supportive spaces where movement and community help young people manage stress, heal and regain hope.
- Prevention of Violent Extremism and Reintegration: building positive identity, belonging and purpose through sport to reduce vulnerability to violence and support reintegration.
- Skills, Livelihoods and Leadership: training, mentoring and leadership opportunities that build confidence and open pathways to livelihoods.
- Research, Advocacy and Partnerships: learning from evidence, advocating for youth wellbeing and building partnerships that expand our reach.
Our programmes
Our pillars come to life through eight programmes, including National Fitness 365, National Fitness Youth, National Fitness Women and National Fitness Community. You can read about all eight on our programmes page.
What guides us
Our work rests on clear values: dignity and respect, Do No Harm, integrity and accountability, inclusion, neutrality and peace, quality and evidence, partnership and innovation, and hope and resilience. Safeguarding the people who take part in our activities always comes first.
Measuring what matters
We are committed to learning and accountability. Within our first 90 days of structured monitoring, we plan to establish a baseline so we can track progress honestly over time. You can read about the outcomes we are working towards on our impact page.
