Keeping Somali Heritage Alive Through Movement

Long before gyms and football pitches, Somali communities were already moving together. Dance, song, games and gatherings have always been part of how people celebrate, connect and pass on their values.

At National Fitness, we believe this heritage belongs at the heart of sport. Combining traditional Somali games and culture with modern fitness is one of the things that makes our approach different.

A culture built on togetherness

Somali culture places great value on community, hospitality and shared experience. Gatherings bring families and neighbours together, and celebrations are rarely complete without music and dance.

These traditions do more than entertain. They build trust, keep memories alive and give young people a strong sense of who they are and where they come from.

Dance as movement

Traditional dances such as dhaanto are energetic, rhythmic and joyful. They involve the whole body and are usually performed in groups. In other words, they are a form of exercise that people genuinely love.

When young people learn and perform these dances, they stay active while connecting with their elders and their history.

Games that teach and connect

Somali communities have long enjoyed traditional games, from active outdoor play to strategy games such as shax, a board game that sharpens the mind. These games teach patience, quick thinking and fair play.

Why culture makes sport stronger

Bringing culture into sport has clear benefits:

  • It welcomes everyone. Activities rooted in shared traditions feel familiar and inclusive, so more people take part.
  • It builds positive identity. Young people take pride in their heritage and see it valued.
  • It bridges generations. Elders, parents and young people can join in together.
  • It strengthens peace. Shared culture reminds people of what unites them.

National Fitness Community

Our National Fitness Community programme brings people together through traditional games, sports, music, dance and cultural activities. It is one of the ways we connect movement, culture and community participation to promote wellbeing, dignity and peace.

You can see moments from our activities in our gallery.
