Somalia is one of the youngest countries in the world. Its young people carry enormous energy, talent and hope. Yet many have grown up surrounded by conflict, displacement and uncertainty, with few safe places to play, train or simply be young.
At National Fitness, we believe that youth fitness in Somalia is not a luxury. It is one of the simplest and most powerful ways to support young people’s health, wellbeing and future.
Fitness builds a healthier body
Regular physical activity strengthens the heart, muscles and bones. It supports healthy growth and lowers the risk of long-term illness later in life. The World Health Organization recommends that young people aged 5 to 17 get an average of 60 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity every day.
For many young people, that hour is hard to find. Safe, organised activities make it possible.
Movement supports the mind
Physical activity is good for mental health too. Exercise can help reduce stress, improve sleep and lift mood. For young people who have lived through difficult experiences, a regular training session can offer something steady to rely on.
This is why mental health and psychosocial support is one of our five strategic pillars. We see fitness sessions as safe, supportive spaces where young people can manage stress, heal and regain hope.
Sport creates belonging
When young people train together, they build friendships and trust. A team gives them a place where they matter. Over time, that sense of belonging can grow into a positive identity and a stronger connection to their community.
Sport also teaches teamwork, discipline and respect. These are lessons that last far beyond the field.
Confidence and leadership grow through sport
Setting a goal and reaching it, whether that is running further, lifting heavier or learning a new skill, builds confidence. Through training, mentoring and leadership opportunities, young people can discover what they are capable of and start to lead others.
Our National Fitness Youth programme supports young people aged 15 to 35 with training, mentoring, skills and leadership development.
